South Alabama Takes Memphis Intercollegiate Title
by USAJaguars.com (10/21/2009)

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Marc-Etienne Bussieres picked up his second tournament victory in as many years Tuesday after claiming medalist honors at the sixth annual Memphis Intercollegiate, leading the University of South Alabama to the team championship in the process.

It's the second individual title Bussieres has earned in the last two seasons after winning the Palmer's Toyota Fall Intercollegiate to begin the 2008-09 campaign.  On Tuesday, the senior finished a second-round 69 with birdies on two of the final three holes, then came back to post a 5-under-par 67 - the best round of the tournament - over the final 18 holes at the par-72, 7,259-yard Colonial Country Club South Course to win the event by 10 strokes over Espen Kofstad from fellow Sun Belt Conference member Denver.

Bussieres' 54-hole 9-under-par 207 set a tournament record.

The Jaguars overcame a field comprised of 16 teams, including seven that were ranked in the top 100 of the most recent Golfweek/Sagarin ratings, by posting team scores of 293 in each of the final two rounds to defeat another Sun Belt foe, UALR, by five strokes.  USA finished with a three-round total of 882 to earn its first regular-season tournament championship outside of Mobile since February 2004, when the Jaguars took the 12-team Rio Pinar Invitational in Orlando, Fla.

Bussieres would finish with just one bogey in 21 holes on the day while collecting seven birdies.  After a bogey five at No. 14 left him 1-under through 11 holes, he would reel off four birdies in five holes to pull away for the individual championship.  He started the stretch with a two at the 15th, then proceeded to record fours on Nos. 16, 18 and 1.  It was the third time in as many rounds that he birdied the first hole, helping him go 4-under on par five holes in the final round.

Bussieres began the day with birdies on the first and third holes to wrap up a 3-under-par performance in the middle round in which he fired a 30 over the last nine holes.

Jack Hiluta rebounded from an 82 in the first round to post back-to-back scores of 1-under-par 71 on Tuesday, while Chris Piumelli carded a 74 in each of the final two rounds as both finished in a tie for 17th with a total of 224 over 54 holes.

Hiluta used five birdies on his final six holes to end the second round, while a stretch of three straight birdies on Nos. 16-18 led to a second straight sub-par round.

After posting two birdies combined in the first two rounds, Piumelli came back to record three over the final 18 holes.  He birdied Nos. 7 and 9 to stand 1-under-par through four holes, then added another on the 573-yard par five 16th.

McLain Leberte, playing in his first collegiate event, shot a 79 in the second round and an 81 in the last round, but he was 1-under-par on the final six holes of the tournament to help the Jaguars hold off the Trojans.  He finished tied for 64th with a 54-hole score of 235.  Chris Bockstael had a three-round 241 total after shooting an 84 and an 83 in last two rounds, with Blake Kelley - competing as an individual - bouncing back from an 87 on the first day to record scores of 78 and 77 to finish one shot behind Bockstael.

Ninety players competed in the event.

The Jaguars led after the opening 18 holes by five shots and were the only team in the field to post a sub-300 total in each of the event's three rounds.  Southern Mississippi finished third, 12 shots behind the Jags, while Iowa State and Denver completed the top five.
