California Wins Arizona Intercollegiate
by CalBears.com (2/3/2010)

TUCSON, AZ - Cal charged back by making up 12 shots on the final four holes and set a school-record with its third tournament victory of the regular season, knocking off host Arizona on Tuesday by a single shot at the Arizona Intercollegiate. The Golden Bears' four scoring players were five-under par on the 18th hole with three birdies and an Eric Mina eagle.

"This was really special," said Cal head coach Steve Desimone. "It was a very dramatic scene with everybody gathered on the 18th green, and as far as regular-season victories go this was about as good as it gets. We had to dig in against a great field today that featured some of the top-ranked teams in the country."

Michael Weaver, who had led the two-day 54-hole event at the end of Monday's first two rounds, finished tied for second with a 10-under par three-round total of 203 after shooting a par-71 round (four birdies, four bogeys) on Tuesday. Arizona's Rich Saferian won the event played at Arizona National with a 13-under par three-round total of 824 after shooting the best 18 holes of the day Tuesday with a round of 66.

Cal held a seven-shot lead going into the day's action but let it slip away to a hot Arizona team and found themselves trailing the Wildcats by 11 strokes late in the round before the Bears' four scoring golfers played the final four holes a combined eight-under par, while the Wildcats' faltered despite still shooting the best team score of the day at 10-under par 274.

"Yesterday the game was easy, today the game was very difficult," said Desimone in reference to Cal's 25-under par effort over the first two rounds Monday. "But anytime you go from a seven-shot lead to an 11-shot deficit over 13 or 14 holes, and then turn around and make up 12 shots over the last four holes that is an incredible team effort. It was about as clutch as you can get."

Cal shot a four-under par final round of 280 on Tuesday to finish the tournament with a 54-hole total of 29-under par 823. Arizona (824, -28), Fresno State (838, -14), Florida (839, -13), Texas A&M (841, -11), Pepperdine (847, -5) and UNLV (848, -4) were the other clubs under par for the tournament and placed second through seventh in the team scoring.

Mina was the next Cal individual finisher after Weaver as he shot a one-under par 70 on Tuesday and ended up tying for fifth overall with a three-day score of seven-under par 206. He was two-over par until the final three holes when he came up with a birdie on 16 and then his eagle on the par-five 18th.

Chad Vivolo finished 10th (208, -5) as he moved up eight spots from an 18th-place tie after Monday's first day of action by shooting a three-under par 68 (five birdies, two bogeys) on Tuesday.
