Colorado State Claims Third Straight Del Walker Intercollegiate
by CSURams.com (10/24/2009)

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Colorado State men’s golf team finished its fall season on an upswing, winning its third Del Walker Intercollegiate team title in as many years.

The Rams also held the team title in 2007 and in 2008, when they set the tournament-record low score with 811.

The Rams jumped in the early lead at the Virginia Country Club Thursday and were able to pull away from the pack in the final day of action. CSU finished 20 stokes below par with a three-round total of 1030. (This season, the Del Walker counted the best five of six scores each round, opposed to previous seasons when the best four of five were counted.)

The nearest follower was host Long Beach State, nine strokes behind the Rams. Michael Drake of the 49ers shot a 199 to claim individual honors.

Riley Arp (-9), only two strokes off Drake, tied for second for his fourth top-10 finish of the season. Bryce Hanstad and Dustin Morris also notched a top-10 appearance, claiming sixth and tenth, respectively. Hanstad (-6) shot a 204, carding three birdies and an eagle on the back nine Friday. Morris (-4) fired an even-par final round to come away with a 206.

Zahkai Brown (-2) recovered from a slow start and shot nine birdies in the second half to the tournament (opposed to four in the first half) to earn his third top-20 showing this fall with a 17th place finish. Sean McNamara (+1) tied for 26th with a 211 with Ryan Peterson only one stroke behind him, in a tie for 31st.

Head Coach Jamie Bermel was pleased with the win.

“It was a great team win,” Bermel said. “Everybody played really well from top to bottom. Riley had a chance to win; he just didn’t quite get it done. Oregon is ranked 14th (by golfstat.com) and I think we beat them by 12, so that was a nice win against them. This was a nice way to end the fall season, hopefully we can carry that momentum over into the spring.”
