by Pepperdine Sports Information (9/21/2009)
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Pepperdine women's golf team is now 2-for-2, having won its second tournament of the young season on Sunday after capturing the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational by seven strokes.

The Waves opened the third and final round at the par-73 UNM Championship Course with a five-stroke lead and maintained their advantage throughout the day.

Pepperdine shot a final-round 8-under 284 to end up with a 17-under 859 (288-287-284). Second-place New Mexico, the host school, finished at 866. UNLV and TCU, which tied for third, were 24 strokes back at 883.

The Waves' 17-under is the third-best team tournament score in school history. The 8-under tied as the fifth-best single round in program history.

The last time Pepperdine won consecutive tournaments was also the last time the Waves won their first two tournaments of the season. In the fall of 2005, they won the Dick McGuire Invitational and the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational to start the year. The Waves went on to finish third at the 2006 NCAA Championships.

Individually, three Waves finished in the top 10, and four were in the top 15.

Junior Taylore Karle (Scottsdale, Ariz./Laurel Springs Academy) finished in third place after her third straight sub-par round, firing a 4-under 69 to finish with an 8-under 211 (71-71-69). She is off to a terrific start after taking fifth place at the Golfweek Conference Challenge. Today, she posted five birdies on her first six holes and finished with a total of six birdies.

Sophomore Kaitlin Drolson (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) dropped a few spots in the standings after a 2-over 75, but her three-round total of a 2-under 217 (72-70-75) was still good for a tie for ninth place.

Sophomore Lisa McCloskey (Montgomery, Texas/Montgomery HS) continued to play very consistent golf, as her 2-under 71 moved her up into 12th place with a 1-under 218 (73-74-71). She had a total of five birdies during her round, including her final two holes.
