Troy Tops Leaderboard At Northrop
Song, Mozo both under par in first round at annual event in Palos Verdes
by USCTrojans.com (2/9/2010)

Sophomore Jennifer Song, who won both of the 2009 fall tournaments she entered, kicked off the 2010 spring season by firing a 4-under par 67 while senior teammate Belen Mozo chipped in a 69 to lead the No. 8 USC women's golf team on the first day of the 2010 Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge at the Palos Verdes (Calif.) G.C. on Monday (Feb. 8).

The Trojans finished the first round alone in first at even 284, eight shots ahead of second-place Duke (292) while Pepperdine and UCLA tied for third (295).

Song, Golfstat.com's No. 1-ranked golfer, was 1-under going out with birdies on 4 and 7 and a bogey on 8. After securing par on five consecutive par-4 holes, Song used birdies on 14, 15 and 16 to get to 4-under for the round. Her 67 marked her fifth round in six this season in which she was 67 or lower. She is tied for the lead with Duke's Lindy Duncan.

Mozo, fully healed from a shoulder injury that bothered her for much of 2009, got off to a shaky start to her final spring season as a Trojan, bogeying four of the first five holes. But she warmed up considerably and completed the final 13 holes at 5-under, finish with a 2-under, 69, tied for third. It was her low round of the year.

Song's and Mozo's results today gave both of them 12 career rounds in the 60s, tying the USC career record held by Irene Cho.

Junior Lizette Salas, who owns eight career rounds in the 60s, joined Song and Mozo in the top 10 with a 1-over 72, tied for seventh. Salas was 1-over early and was 2-over through 10 holes before securing three birdies against one double over the final eight holes to finish with a solid round.

Action continues Tuesday and Wednesday (Feb. 9-10).
