Georgia Women Ahead in Puerto Rico
by GeorgiaDogs.com (2/7/2010)
RIO GRANDE, P.R. --- The No. 10-ranked Georgia women's golf team grabbed the first-round lead at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic on Sunday after firing a 4-over 292 at the Trump International Golf Club.

Marta Silva Zamora carded a 2-under 70 to pace the Bulldogs, while Georgia also counted an even-par 72 by Emilie Burger, a 2-over 74 from Tess Fordham and a 4-over 76 by Carolina Andrade.

"I was very pleased by the way we finished," head coach Kelley Hester said. "Nobody was really playing great, but we fought hard at the end and turned it into a very nice round. We turned what was looking like a 300 or a 298 into a 292, which is a very good sign at this point in the season. Marta birdied her final hole, Emilie had two birdies late in the round and I know Tess had a birdie late, too."

Silva Zamora is four shots off the individual lead.

Georgia dropped Kendall Wright's 77. Kiara Hayashida, a transfer from Pepperdine who missed the fall campaign with chronic back spasms, is competing as an individual and shot an 87.

The Bulldogs own a three-stroke lead over No. 9 Alabama. No. 4 Purdue is third at 295, followed by Kent State at 297, Oklahoma State at 300, Wisconsin at 302, Texas Tech at 303, Indiana at 304 and Oklahoma, Northwestern and Baylor all at 306.

Play continues at the Coco Beach Resort on Monday and Tuesday.
