CHARLESTON, S.C. - Senior Tracy Martin and the University of Richmond Spiders women's golf team made it a clean sweep at the Wendy's Invitational on Tuesday, as Martin earned medalist honors and helped lead the Spiders to the tournament team title.
The title is the second in the program's history and the first under head coach Maggie Will, who took over the program prior to this season. Richmond won the 13-team event with a three-round team total 893 (+29), beating runner-up Wofford by 12 strokes.
"They've worked hard, bought in and they're the embodiment of dreams do come true," Will said of her team following the final round. "Couldn't be happier or more proud of this team."
Martin was fantastic for the Spiders this week, becoming just the second golfer in program history to earn medalist honors in a full-field event. After shooting rounds of 70-73 on Monday, the Tyngsboro, Mass. native carded a final round 72 (E) to win the individual title. Martin's total of 215 (-1) ties her own 54-hole school record she set at the Spider Invitational last season.
"Tracy was so solid all week," Will said of Martin. "She stayed within herself, played her game and was patient with her putter. Just a great, solid showing all tournament long."
Senior Courtney Rousse notched her second career top-10 finish at the Wendy's Invitational, carding a three round score of 222 (+6) to tie for fifth place. Rousse's score is a personal best and ties her for the 10th best 54-hole total in school history.
Three more Spider golfers earned top-20 finishes, led by junior Lauren Conder who placed 13th with a score of 228 (+12). The top-20 was the seventh in Conder's career. Classmate Viviana Perez earned her third career top-20, tying for 16th with a score of 230 (+14) - a career best.
Not to be outdone, senior Caroline Lovette tallied her second top-20 this year, placing in a tie for 18th with a score of 231 (+15). The top-20 was the eighth of Lovette's fine Richmond career. Playing as an individual, junior Krystin Schwarze came in 68th with a total of 256 (+40).
