MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The No. 26-ranked College of Charleston women’s golf team won its first tournament in two years today when the team shot a final-round 300 (+12) to finish at +13, thirteen strokes clear of second-place Coastal Carolina at the CSU Wendy’s Invitational at Rivertowne Country Club.
It was the first win for the Cougars since April of 2011 when the team captured the home-hosted Pinehurst Challenge at Pinehurst No. 6.
Freshman Laura Fuenfstueck (Frankfurt, Germany), ranked No. 69 in the country by Golfstat.com, claimed the individual tournament title with an overall score of 215 (-1). Fuenfstueck held her ground in front of Lena Schaeffner of Coastal Carolina who finished the tournament with a score of 218 (+2).
Three other CofC players placed in the top 10 for the tournament – senior Kathryn Miranda (Lexington, Ky.), ranked No. 86 in the country by Golfstat.com, finished in a tie for third with teammate Louise Olsson (Uddeholm, Sweden) with a three-round score of 223 (+7). Sophomore Mary Chandler Bryan (Chapin, S.C.) was not far behind as she finished in a tie for ninth with a score of 225 (+9).
“We played incredibly well on the back nine today after Coastal Carolina had cut it close,” CofC Head Coach Jamie Futrell said. “It was really windy which made it tough but the girls played great which allowed us to hold onto our lead from yesterday. It was a great team effort and I’m very proud of how the team played the last two days.”
